About the Role

The Maintenance Electrician is responsible for the safe and effective operation and maintenance of LV electrical installations at the University. The electrician is part of a team of 5 and works closely with the 5 fitter/plumbers and 4 M&E Assistants in the directly employed maintenance team. 

The Maintenance Electrician undertakes planned preventative maintenance work on LV electrical installations (e.g., single and three phase power, emergency power, emergency lighting, internal and external, fire alarms, motors, and control panels), contributing to achieving legislative compliance and high standards of engineering maintenance, as well as responding to reactive works fault finding and carrying out emergency repairs.

This role is based on site at our Milton Keynes campus. The maintenance electrician responds to out of hours emergencies on mechanical building services and plumbing systems as part of an on call rota with the fitter / plumbers and contract support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance work on LV electrician installations (e.g., single and three phase power, emergency power, emergency lighting, internal and external, fire alarms, motors, and control panels) reporting all defects.
  • Undertake reactive maintenance work, fault finding and repairs on all types of LV electrical installations (e.g., single and three phase power, emergency power, emergency lighting, internal and external lighting, fire alarms, motors, and control panels) reporting all defects.
  • Inclusion on the University out of hours call out rota for maintenance emergencies.
  • Develop personal knowledge and understanding of the electrical installations and undertake regular distribution switch room and plant room inspections.
  • Required to provide guidance on site installations to other trade staff and contractors.
  • Undertake minor LV electrical installations and testing.
  • Inclusion within the Fire Incident Team responding to fire alarm activations as first line response to reduce the number of unwanted calls to the Local Fire and Rescue Services.
  • Undertake occasional Portable Appliance Testing as required.
  • Responsible for always working safely, complying with risk assessments, safe systems of work and safety standards to control hazards to self, colleagues, University staff and visitors.
  • Carries out inspections of electrical installations and appliances, updating schedules as required.
  • Routinely log hours taken and materials used for all tasks and complete timesheets as directed.
  • Undertake from time to time other appropriate responsibilities and duties as directed by the Supervisor/Manager.

Skills and Experience

Essential Requirements

  • Craft apprenticeship with City & Guilds or BTEC National Certificate/Diploma, or an advanced modern apprenticeship (NVQ L2 with key skills) in electrical installation or equivalent qualification.
  • BS 7671 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations knowledge.
  • Proven post apprenticeship experience in the operation and maintenance of electrical installations.
  • A working knowledge of health and safety issues and understanding of risk assessments.
  • Ability to work safely on roofs, from ladders, scaffolds and in confined spaces such as inspection chambers and roof voids.
  • Ability to routinely complete maintenance work request sheets within timescale, recording work done, hours taken, and materials used.
  • Work as part of a team coordinating workloads with colleagues, supervisor, and customers.
  • Ability to cope with a steady volume of work using initiative in an organized manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisor, managers, and customers at all levels.
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and proactive assisting other trades and contractors and on occasion labouring as required.
  • Full and current UK driving license as you will be using university vehicles to carry equipment/tools across campus.
  • To participate in the emergency, call out rota and be able to respond to additional out of hours emergencies when called to assist others. Response time for attendance on site is within 45 minutes.
  • Participation in the Fire Incident Team responding to fire alarm activations as a first response reducing false alarms to Local Fire and Rescue Services.

Desirable

  • City and Guilds – 2395 Level 3 Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations
  • Trained in working at height, confined spaces, asbestos awareness, risk assessments.
  • Able to update schedules of plant and equipment.
  • Capable of reading maintenance manuals and drawings.
  • Able to pass on knowledge and give guidance to other team members and contractors as required.
