Type of Contract: Full-time, Funding Limited until 31 March 2027

The Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen, is world-leading in nutrition research focussing on some of the key global challenges with regards to healthy and sustainable diets, food safety, and the Scottish food supply chain. The research contributes not only to new scientific knowledge, but also to new understanding to underpin Government policies and to inform innovation for industry leading to increased economic growth. Our main source of funding is from the Scottish Government funded Strategic Research Programme (SRP) which we deliver along with five other globally renowned institutes as part of Scottish Environment, Food and Agriculture Research Institutions (SEFARI).

A new SRP started in April 1st 2022 with the vision of “supporting research that is relevant, respected and responsive to Scotland’s environment, communities, its people and the rural economy.” As part of this programme of research, we are seeking a postdoctoral Research Fellow who will work in the wider Theme B: Sustainable Food System and Supply.

The post involves using sectoral datasets, and a demand elasticity matrix, to model future supply scenarios of food production, pricing, and consumer demand, to optimise nutritional value and minimise environmental impacts, enabling the quantification of impacts of a transition to more healthy and sustainable food options.

Although the appointment is made through the Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen you will work closely with researchers from Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) in Edinburgh as well as colleagues in Aberdeen.

The successful candidate should have post-graduate qualifications to PhD level (or very near to completion) within the fields of economics, agricultural economics and experience working on food supply chains. Understanding and experience collecting data and analysing (e.g., using statistical methods) agricultural and food economics data (e.g., production, processing, consumption), the interaction of food, health (nutrition) and the environment, and an ability to report results are essential. Excellent communication skills are also essential, as is the ability to work as a member of multi-disciplinary teams.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 scale, £38,249 per annum, pro rata.

Prior to employment, the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK.  This role may be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route under the UKVI immigration rules but is dependent on factors specific to the candidate and if tradeable points can be used under the rules.
